How do I explore an infamous novel like 1984? How do I interpret a script that explores an infamous and pervasive novel like 1984? Which should I beholden to? How do you validate choices made in the script that are not authentic to the book?


I knew that when 1984 was selected for the season that reading the book was imperative. Source documents are incredibly important interpreting history, art, and scripts. While I don't know that there will be die hard fans of the script, there will be fans of the book and it is the book that my production will be measured against.


I have pulled ideas, feelings, blocking and moods from the book that currently don't happen in our script but might serve to tell our story in a moving and relevant way. I want the story and the script to sparkle with relevancy to my audience today while using the words we have been given from a book that is legendary.
