This play is an adaptation of George Orwell’s famous 1949 dystopian novel about political dictatorship in an age of surround-media. This play was important to produce because the idea of finding ourselves in a world where fake facts, revised history has become shockingly plausible. Throughout the world there has been an increase in polarizing political beliefs based in dogmatic ideology that supersede critical thought and safe personal expression.
My love of this project lies in that 1984 is a timeless cautionary tale for what can happen if government tyranny and blind acceptance of ideology go unchecked. No specific contemporary political references are necessary as the audience will bring their own fears and burdens into the show. Uncomfortable to witness, the production is intended to inspire the audience to question their own participation and complacency with political rhetoric.
